TIPS & TRICKS

The Motormate is now included with your DC motor! This littleBits accessory makes it simple and easy to attach wheels, paper, cardboard, and other materials to the 3mm ‘D’ shape of the DC Motor shaft, which helps bring littleBits projects to life.

Before the Motormate, keeping a wheel or turntable on the DC motor wasn’t easy. Thankfully, the Motormate eliminates the need for any specialty accessories and allows you to use any craft materials you have laying around. Here’s how it works:

 

1.) ATTACH A THIN ROD

If an object is around ⅛ inch in diameter you can push it directly into the cross shape hole of the Motormate. The slits on the Motormate are actually flexible, so you can use any object close to ⅛ inch diameter and it will stay in place. 2. POWER A LEGO(™)SHAFT

The cross shaped hole on a Motormate fits perfectly with the Lego shaft. We know many creators in our littleBits community use Legos as their project framework, and so do we. Here’s an example of how we incorporated Lego blocks into a littleBits project using a Motormate.

 

3.) GRAB A PIECE OF PAPER

Any material that has the right width can be used with the Motormate. The slits have different gauges so they can adapt to a range of different sizes. Two of our favorite materials are cardboard and construction paper. Construction paper is actually a bit too thin, but when you fold it, it fits perfectly!

 

 

4.) TRY ANYTHING YOU HAVE LAYING AROUND

One unexpected material is the Popsicle stick. It’s a great intermediary between a Motormate and any other materials. The popsicle stick is great for when you want to use glue but don’t want to get your modules covered in glue. Apply as much glue or tape as you need to one end of the popsicle stick and then add on the materials. Simply place the other end into the Motormate.

 

5.) SPIN A BIG PLATE

You can use a Lego wheel to support the weight of a bigger plate. The rubber part of the wheel holds traction and keeps the plate from slipping away.

 

6.) MAKING A LARGER PROJECT SPIN

Is your project too long or heavy for the DC motor? Try adding another Motormate at the opposite end of the DC motor! You can add a second Motormate inside of a pipe and it will act as a bearing.
